Map Your Neighborhood is a statewide preparedness program that Island County uses to help neighborhoods get ready for disasters. It walks neighbors through simple steps to take in the first hours after an event and teaches them to rely on each other before fire, medical, police or utility crews arrive. The county publishes supporting materials, including a version for rural neighborhoods.

The county’s communications page notes that CERT and Map Your Neighborhood recommend a central meeting place for neighbors, and it explains how FRS and GMRS radios can help when phones are down. GMRS needs an FCC license.

Before you rely on any group: contact them, join a practice net or drill, and keep calling 911 first whenever you can.
